Meet Jewel Ho!

Jewel is working as a data analyst at Bloomberg. She spent her college years in Toronto and majored in financial engineering. She was also the 64th President of the Hong Kong Toastmasters Club, a non-profit organization that promotes leadership and communication through public speaking.

Promoting inclusion and diversity in the tech industry

From a young age, Jewel had a passion for volunteerism, participating in events such as flag selling. She later joined Toastmasters, where she took part in the “Youth Leadership Program”, where she held various workshops and adjudicated in public speaking competitions for secondary school students.

Recently, Jewel participated in “Girls Go Tech” — a project organized by The Women’s Foundation. The project aims to teach programming and computer science to girls in secondary schools. Participants would design a smart home with automated household appliances controlled by sensors.

Jewel strives to advocate leadership in women and provide tech-based training and education for them.

Throughout her journey, she was amazed by the creativity and innovative thinking in the minds of young girls in the project “Girls Go Tech”. They designed many contraptions that used unconventional means to solve daily problems in life. She commented that experiencing this unrestrained expression of creativity is one of her biggest joys in volunteering, in addition to being able to help the underprivileged.

“Many female, including myself thought leaders need to act aggressively, and this contradicts with the traditional thought of a feminist.”

It is until she met Angie Lau, former Bloomberg TV anchor, at the Time Auction event that changed her. She was deeply touched by the genuine sincerity and authenticity of Angie. At the lunch, a girl was brought to tears when Angie showed care for her condition. Her empathy, compassion, and care became a great inspiration for Jewel in understanding about leadership styles.

Learning through intimate conversations

“When you meet a person in a face-to-face context, you can often discover something you cannot read online.”

When joining the Time Auction events, Jewel always had this central question in mind — “How do you get to where you are?” She wished to know the key to one’s success. She said that Time Auction events allowed her to closely interact and communicate with many influential figures. She learned about their personal life stories through their conversations. More importantly, she learned about their personalities and manners through the way they act.

“Inequality in education opportunities widens the income gap. Time Auction levels the playing field by providing access to resources to success.”

Jewel also attended Time Auction events with various leaders in multiple sectors including David Yeung, Founder of Green Monday. At these events, she gained a lot of business industry knowledge, as well as learning the best from them.

“If you give anything less than your best, you are sacrificing your own gift.”

Jewel believes that contributing to the world is a worthy goal to pursue. For those who are lost and lacking direction in life, it doesn’t matter what path you take. As long as you are working towards a good cause, you are on the right track.

Thank you so much to Jewel for contributing 76 volunteer hours and participating in 6 of our events!
