Background

CODA Hong Kong produces various video content to support the deaf community, raise awareness about their needs, and share information about our services and activities. To reach a wider international audience and make our resources accessible to English speakers, we require volunteers to translate the spoken content of our videos into English and create subtitles. Accurate and well-timed English subtitles are essential for effective communication and broadening the impact of our video content. By providing English subtitles, we aim to enhance understanding and engagement among a more diverse audience, fostering greater global awareness and support for the deaf community in Hong Kong. This initiative will significantly contribute to our international outreach efforts.

What we have

We will provide the volunteer with the video link(s) that require English subtitles. We will also offer any available transcripts or background information about the video content to aid in accurate translation. Guidance on YouTube subtitle formats (.srt and .sbv) and examples will be provided if needed. We can also recommend free and user-friendly subtitling software. Our staff will be available to answer any questions the volunteer may have regarding the video content or the translation and subtitling process. We greatly appreciate the volunteer's contribution to making our resources accessible to a global audience.

Why this is important

Adding English subtitles to our videos will directly contribute to CODA Hong Kong's goals by: Increasing Global Reach: Making our information and resources accessible to an international English-speaking audience. Enhancing International Understanding: Facilitating better understanding of the issues faced by the deaf community in Hong Kong among a global audience. Expanding Our Network: Connecting with international organizations and individuals who support the deaf community. Promoting Inclusivity on a Global Scale: Ensuring that our message reaches a wider and more diverse audience, fostering global inclusivity. By making our video content available in English, we can expand our impact and build stronger international connections in support of the deaf community.

What we do

CODA Hong Kong (Children of Deaf Adults) is the first of its kind in Asia. Established in 2013, its objectives are to help CODAs of Hong Kong understand and acknowledge their special identity as bilingual and bicultural, learn and develop potential skills, build a self-help community, and adopt positive outlooks of life. CODAs are the second generation of deaf people. We are therefore concerned about government policies of deaf welfare and sign language. Through education, advocacy, publication and academic research, we promote knowledge of sign language and deaf culture to the public and various stakeholders. We believe in building a society in which the deaf and the hearing integrate harmoniously.
