About Prof. Peter Singer
Peter Singer is frequently regarded as the most influential philosopher globally. He has written significant works, including Animal Liberation, Practical Ethics, and The Life You Can Save. His efforts have been pivotal in initiating the animal rights and effective altruism movements, as well as advancing the field of bioethics.
Talk and Panel Discussion
Effective altruism is a philosophy and social movement that applies evidence and reason to determine the most effective ways to improve the world and encourages people to make it one of their life goals to do as much good as they can.
The discussion will start with Peter Singer outlining the key values and concepts of effective altruism, followed by an exploration of three main concerns: reducing extreme poverty, alleviating the suffering of nonhuman animals—especially in factory farms—and minimizing the risk of human extinction. Prof. Singer will emphasize the importance of basing our actions on reason for the effectiveness of our chosen course of action.
Moderated by Dr. Gary O’Brien, panelists Dr. Samson Pak-nin Kwok and Dr. Kwan Ho Chuen will then respond and discuss the idea of Effective Altruism from their unique perspectives.
3 volunteer hours must be completed during 17 Oct 2023 to 31 Oct 2024.
