It all began with America’s Next Top Model. I was in high school, watching Tyra Banks’ shenanigans on TVB Pearl (millennials would know). Despite all the drama, the show was a handy resource for me to learn about fashion and the existence of plus-size models. One tip from the show stuck with me–always find the light during your photoshoot.
“Finding the light” seems to be the theme of my personal struggle. Growing up in diet culture, I found myself hidden behind loose-fitting clothes, camouflaging my body in dark colors that were meant to be "slimming." Instead of embracing my light, I was evading it.
My anxiety about my body peaked during my wedding planning—the fear that no dress would fit me, and the apprehension of being seen by hundreds of people. To face the fear, I started therapy to heal my relationship with my body and looked for experiences that would help me gain more confidence. One of them was going for personal colour, face and body structure analyses. I discovered that bright colours enhanced my features, while clothing that accentuates my waist celebrated my shape. Uncovering my style empowered me with the courage to step into the spotlight.
This transformative experience ignited a spark within me to continue learning. I then traveled to Tokyo to be trained as an image consultant. It felt like I had found my calling.
The dots started to connect—my love for fashion and beauty, my background in counselling, my work experience in marketing within the art scene, and my journey of healing. I realised that I could provide image styling services that are more attuned, by incorporating intuitive tools to help clients connect with their inner selves. I can offer styling tips and examples that are more inclusive of various sizes. I believe that our bodies are the gateway for us to authentically express our essences.
So, let me help you find your light, through colours and style, gently in a space that allows for reflection and discovery.
