Background

The SoCO English tutoring programme, funded by KPMG, aims to promote high standards of literacy and oral skills by learning new vocabularies, encouraging English speaking, and also develop their interest in English through widespread reading. Tutors will provide weekly sessions for 13 weeks, based on their availability for students to practice and improve their English skills with a tutor through various ways such as casual chatting, homework guidance, English tutoring, revision of test papers etc. 80% participation (10-11 sessions) is required for both tutors and students. Each session lasts for 40 minutes to 1 hour and each session.

What we have

Volunteers are required to participate in 2x short training courses (4 hours total) for the programme through zoom. The online training course splits into two sessions. The first session will be conducted by a SoCO staff which includes the introduction of the programme, students' learning needs, and administration procedures. The second session will be conducted by an experienced tutor from an English learning agency who teaches about communication and teaching skills on how to improve students' learning motivation and interests. Online Training happens on 23, 30 Sep 7:30-9:30 pm

Why this is important

As SoCO aims to provide help to underprivileged children and families, this project can provide more opportunities for underprivileged children to gain access to extra English tuition, improve their English literacy and oral skills through mentorship.

What we do

Work for dignity Society for Community Organization (SoCO) is a human rights advocacy group established in 1972, dedicated to serve the underprivileged community in Hong Kong. Working with limited resources, SoCO advocates for comprehensive social policy changes to ensure the protection of fundamental human rights of people in Hong Kong. Struggle for survival In the metropolitan city of Hong Kong, there are over 1.4 million people living in poverty. Over 200,000 residents live in urban slums, in squalid conditions that are inadequate for basic living with human dignity. These marginalized groups include caged home lodgers, families with children living in cramped wood-partitioned cubicles, sub-divided units’ households, new immigrants, homeless people as well as people with mental illness all struggling for survival.
