Project Details

What we need
  • Participate in our SEN training
  • Weekly / bi-weekly choir practices with our small group of SEN children (8-10 sessions in total)
  • Sing with our choir during community performances
Background

SEN Foundation is partnering up with a team of Occupational Therapists at Haven of Hope Christian Service to launch a community choir in Summer 2021. This project reflects our beliefs for bottom-up empowerment and our effort to tailor interventions for each unique individual using professional assessments and research. The Choir brought together 22 young choristers with a range of special needs - They attended choral workshops and an occupational therapy assessment before their training, allowing our therapists and music educators to understand them and design their specific needs. This programme aims to empower the participants to appreciate music and creatively using it to express themselves, it also brought Rivertones members (with special needs) and ReLive members (with physical disabilities) opportunities to engage with a wider community through performances and a final graduation concert to conclude the programme.

What we have

(1) Guidance and supervision from the Choirmaster (2) Choral workshops for individual development (3) Direct collaboration with learning specialists, occupational therapists (4) SEN pedagogy training

Why this is important

Objectives: (1) Supporting SENs to excel from the mainstream education framework (2) Bringing SENs together, enabling their self and mutual empowerment (3) Empowering SEN students’ voice, allowing them to express themselves through music (4) Engage different communities with SEN students to build connection and destigmatise special needs (5) To maximise the potentials and readiness in music of SEN students through therapeutic input

What we do

The Special Educational Needs Foundation (SEN Foundation 彼學會) is a Hong Kong Tax-Exempt Charity (IRD 91/17696). We aim to serve the needs of the students with SENs in Hong Kong that are not accommodated today in the established institutions. Our mission is: 1. To Formalise a community to fulfil the needs of the SENs that are not accommodated today in the established institution. 2. To provide alternative learning opportunities for the SENs to encourage self and mutual empowerment. 3. To provide legal and communicational support to ensure the SENs in getting their entitled learning/working provisions. 4. To educate the society about the SENs. 5. To destigmatise the SENs and make the society more inclusive and liveable for them. We are currently recruiting all sorts of volunteers who are passionate about SEN services to join our growing team.
