Background

Happy Hour on a Mission is JWB's annual fundraiser, with the signature feature being a trivia quiz. In 2024, we plan to host this event on Hong Kong Island, during the second week of May. Invitations are sent to our support community, including corporate and individual donors, and partner organizations. They are asked to sign up for the event (through sponsorships and ticket sales) and create teams to compete in the quiz. In HHOAM, there will be welcoming speeches by our staff and partners, followed by the quiz. Afterwards, there will be a 10-minute power pledge which participants are encouraged to donate through a QR code. Volunteers would be involved in event planning, finding vendors, and promotion of the event which will be done remote. We hope volunteers can provide on-site support such as registration, and coordination during the event in person which will be held in Hong Kong island.

What we have

Support materials and access to previous resources will be given. Participants are given thank-you gifts at the end of the event and they can stay to take group photos and network.

Why this is important

HHOAM will help raise essential funds to cover our litigation, capacity building, and operation expenses. The funds raised can be as simple as topping up a client's phone so they gain internet access to follow up on cross-border claims even in rural areas; to filing a statement of claim at a local court, and obtaining medical records during the evidence-collection stage, and other court fees. Given cross-border litigation is a niche skill, we want to spread this expertise to frontline unions so they can help their sisters in need. Union leaders will be trained on casework and psychological first aid skills to help with traumatized clients. The funds raised will support the planning and logistics of our training events. Moreover, another goal of HHOAM is to celebrate our partnerships with pro bono lawyers and express gratitude for their services to our MDW clients. We hope to retain our partnership and attract new ones as well.

What we do

Founded in 2013, Justice Without Borders (JWB) is a regional non-profit advancing transnational access to legal assistance for migrant workers. Focusing on those who have suffered labor exploitation and human trafficking, we address the unique strategic and logistical issues that lawyers and clients face in bringing cross-border claims. We also work to scale up our impact by imparting our expertise to a growing network of frontline NGOs, law firm partners, and government agencies, so others can take on the work of cross-border access to justice. Justice Without Borders, because justice should be just as mobile as migrant workers.
