Cantonese voice-over for a sign language video of a children's storybook about a deaf family
CODA Hong Kong is creating a series of children's storybooks about the experiences of deaf families, presented in sign language videos with Chinese subtitles. These resources aim to promote understanding and empathy towards deaf individuals and their families among young children. To further enhance the accessibility and engagement of these videos for hearing children in Hong Kong, we are seeking Cantonese voice-over volunteers. By adding a Cantonese narration, we can make the stories more accessible to a wider audience of young learners, including those who may not be familiar with sign language or reading Chinese subtitles. This initiative will help us to promote inclusivity and raise awareness about deaf culture and family life in an engaging and age-appropriate manner.
We will provide the volunteer with the sign language video of the children's storybook, which includes Chinese subtitles for reference. We will also offer guidance on the desired tone and pace for the voice-over, tailored for a young audience. If a recording session at a designated location is required, we will provide the necessary recording equipment and a suitable environment. If the volunteer is recording remotely, we can offer advice on achieving good audio quality. Our team will be available to answer any questions and provide feedback throughout the recording process. We appreciate the volunteer's contribution to making our educational resources more accessible to children.
Providing Cantonese voice-overs for our children's sign language storybook videos will directly contribute to CODA Hong Kong's goals by: Enhancing Accessibility: Making our educational resources more accessible to hearing children in Hong Kong who understand Cantonese. Promoting Early Childhood Education: Providing engaging and age-appropriate content that fosters understanding and empathy towards the deaf community from a young age. Raising Awareness: Increasing awareness about deaf culture, sign language, and the experiences of deaf families among a wider audience. Strengthening Community Engagement: Engaging the hearing community in our mission to support deaf individuals and their families. By making these stories more accessible through Cantonese narration, we can effectively reach more children and promote a more inclusive and understanding society.

CODA Hong Kong (Children of Deaf Adults) is the first of its kind in Asia. Established in 2013, its objectives are to help CODAs of Hong Kong understand and acknowledge their special identity as bilingual and bicultural, learn and develop potential skills, build a self-help community, and adopt positive outlooks of life. CODAs are the second generation of deaf people. We are therefore concerned about government policies of deaf welfare and sign language. Through education, advocacy, publication and academic research, we promote knowledge of sign language and deaf culture to the public and various stakeholders. We believe in building a society in which the deaf and the hearing integrate harmoniously.
