Project Details

What we need
  • Join a 30 min training to understand our process and system
  • Receive bread from our Drop Point Managers and take it to our recipients
  • Preferably Hong Kong island drivers (interested Kowlooners will still be considered, but may be assigned different routes based on where you live)
  • Driving duties are every Friday 9pm to 10pm (around 30m in total), at least bi-monthly
Background

Breadline's volunteers recover surplus bread from bakeries all over Hong Kong every Monday and Friday evening and donate it to the needy.

What we have

We have a grant-winning web platform that allows our volunteer to "work smartly" and recover almost all available bread for donation every single evening we operate (our present hit rate is over 90%). We have a loyal Support Team who assists our volunteers on the road and can provide training and supervision for newcomers.

Why this is important

Breadline is expanding fast: this project started as a one-person activity and it has now involved over 2,000 volunteers and hundreds of bakeries in Hong Kong. With your help we can reach even more bakeries and ensure that no bread goes wasted!

What we do

Breadline is a web application that connects volunteers to bakeries to collect bread surpluses just-in-time for those who need it. We are Hong Kong's first public digital platform for food rescue. Breadline is an initiative by HKFoodWorks, a HK registered charity. We work with major partner NGOs and bakery chains in Hong Kong and we have recovered over 300,000 pieces of bread since we started 3 years ago. Breadline is data-driven and based on Dr. Daisy Tam's ongoing research on food security. It has received multiple local and international grants, including the prestigious Fullbright award and it was partially developed at MIT's Urban Risk Lab. Every day, 3600 tonnes of food waste are sent to landfills in Hong Kong, while one in five people live in poverty and struggle to afford nutritious meals. Breadline's mission is to put a stop to this.
