Tom is the Editor-in-Chief, Co-director of Hong Kong Free Press, the first and only independent English media in Hong Kong

About

Co-founded by Tom, Hong Kong Free Press (www.hongkongfp.com) is a free, non-profit online newspaper based in Hong Kong. It was founded by independent journalists in response to concerns over declining press freedom in the territory, to provide an alternative to the dominant English language news source, the South China Morning Post, and to provide quicker English coverage of local news. Based in Hong Kong for nine years, Tom is a British multimedia journalist. Since completing a BA in Communications & New Media, he has travelled to, and reported from, over 45 countries, including destinations such as Iran, Cuba, Timor-Leste and Burma. His freelance writing and photography has been featured in Quartz, Global Post, Huffington Post, Time Out, Vocativ, New Internationalist, Ming Pao, DPA, EPA, Common Dreams and others. He has also contributed to BBC World TV, BBC Radio, Democracy Now, CTV, Arise TV, Russia Today, RTHK Radio, Sky News and Al-Jazeera America. He has spoken at the University of Hong Kong, Chinese University, the Justice Centre and the New/Now/Next Media Conference on the topics of advocacy journalism, Occupy Central and Hong Kong’s ‘Fifth Estate’. In 2012, he founded a Hong Kong news and culture platform, www.hongwrong.com. The site attracts up to 330,000 unique visitors each month. Tom also started Hong Kong Helpers Campaign (www.hkhelperscampaign.com), an independent campaign formed by a group of local activists to promote the rights of local Foreign Domestic Workers, with 3 campaign points: Scrap the 2-week rule, Enforce maximum working hours and End illegal agency fees. In June 2015, Hong Kong Free Press was launched amid rising concerns over declining press freedom in Hong Kong and during an important time in the city’s constitutional development. Quickly gaining wide readership and traction, HKFP strives to bridge the gap between Chinese and English reporting whilst providing a platform to raise global understanding of Hong Kong and China issues. By December 2015, he will have completed the Master of Journalism programme at Hong Kong University.
