Mr Hoiyat Siu, better known for his online persona, Uncle Siu, owns the Facebook page “Uncle Siu’s British English Club” https://www.facebook.com/unclesiu/. Where he posts short videos or memes in English, these posts serve a variety of purposes, ranging from teaching his audiences how to pronounce certain phrases to discussion of literature. His casual and amusing take on these topics has allowed to amass a large audience as well as ascend the ladder of fame. Graduating from the University of Hong Kong, Mr. Siu possesses a law degree. Yet refusing to ‘drag out some false, shallow, degrading existence that the world in its hypocrisy demands’, he decided not to follow the conventional path that the majority of law degree graduates pursue, but instead turned towards the path of becoming an English educator.

Mr Siu started off as a teacher in high schools, teaching in both Band 1 and Band 3 schools. Desiring to reach more people, he turned towards online platforms starting his very own online blog and posting videos as “HoiyatSiu” which ultimately became is online persona “Uncle Siu”, a lover of dogs and an English educator who shrouds himself in mystery.
