Dr. Chris YIU had been a civil servant specializing in school development and inclusive education for 20 years before he started his special venture at the Centre for Sign Linguistics and Deaf Studies (CSLDS), The Chinese University of Hong Kong to establish an award-winning deaf education model for Hong Kong and other neighboring cities, namely the Sign Bilingualism and Co-enrollment in Deaf Education Programme (SLCO). For the last 15+ years, he has extensive experience in the administration and management of different innovative projects, from project proposal and pitching to research and evaluation. He has established close connections and communications with different external parties including charity foundations, NGOs, Government organizations, universities, and rehabilitation institutions. He is an educational and rehabilitation professional, with a wide range of training and expertise, such as social work, special education, audiology and linguistics, dedicated to the empowerment of persons with disabilities, and the promotion of diversity and inclusion in the society. He is experienced in project management, from proposal to evaluation. In 2016, with the support of the Sustainable Knowledge Transfer Project Fund of CUHK, Chris helped establish the charity organization, SLCO Community Resources (語橋社會資源有限公司) as the co-founder and director. As an independent non-profit charitable organization, the SLCO Community Resources aims to provide self-sustainable community services for people with different aspects of communication needs arisen from deafness or other disabilities. He is especially interested in the design and implementation of social innovation, which aim to improve the welfare and wellbeing of individuals and communities through cross-professional collaboration.
