Meet Simon — A Lifetime of Service and Giving
With over 27 years of public service experience in the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and having served as the Chief Finance Manager (Investment and Operations) at the Hong Kong Housing Authority, Simon’s expertise spans over a broad spectrum, from accounting and financial management to the development of computer systems. He also holds multiple degrees, including a Doctorate in Accounting from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and is a Fellow of both The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Having retired in 2023, Simon’s passion of contributing to society is now enjoyed through volunteering.
Crossroads Foundation: Linking Resources to Lives
Crossroads Foundation is a Hong Kong-based non-profit organization that redistrubes quality excess goods and connects those in need with those who can provide help. Their mission is to support individuals and families locally and globally by providing them with essential items, and ultimately fostering a community of shared resources. Simon discovered the opportunity to volunteer with Crossroads through Time Auction in December 2023. The role of the Donation Distribution Assistant stood out to Simon because it offered the chance to support the operations of the local distribution center that serves people in need. This role aligned perfectly with Simon’s desire to contribute his skills while giving back to the community.
Heartfelt Moments
During his time at Crossroads, Simon worked closely with people from various backgrounds facing significant financial challenges. One particularly memorable moment involved a young, pregnant mother of two who came to the distribution center in desperate need of baby supplies. Through finding a suitable baby chair, stroller, and other essential items, “we were able to provide everything she needed and more, easing her burden at such a critical time,” he shared. This heartwarming experience reinforced Simon’s belief in giving support to those in vulnerable situations.
Dedication in Action
Simon’s contribution did not go unnoticed by the Crossroads team. “Simon has been an invaluable volunteer, consistently demonstrating reliability, punctuality, and a genuine eagerness to assist on every volunteer day,” shared a representative from Crossroads. “His dedication and positive attitude have greatly contributed to the smooth operation of our distribution activities, leaving a lasting impact on both our team and the community we serve.”
Simon’s role extended beyond logistics, as his interactions with beneficiaries added a human touch to the work. Whether he was assisting in the goods boutique or warmly greeting clients at the reception area, “Simon brought a sense of joy and professionalism to every task. His presence not only ensured the efficiency of our operations but also enhanced the overall experience for those we serve. We are incredibly grateful for Simon’s consistent efforts and the significant difference he has made through his work with us.”
Blending Skills with Service
For Simon, volunteering with Crossroads Foundation was a valuable opportunity to blend his professional skills with his passion for service. He believes that the continued success of Crossroads depends not only on financial donations, but also on the dedicated effort of their volunteers.
"Crossroads Foundation plays a critical role in redistributing essential goods to people facing difficult circumstances. Volunteering there not only provides a way to help but also fosters a deeper connection with the community," Simon reflected.
