Outside of business, Mr Chao is well-known for his work to preserve and promote traditional culture and heritage in Hong Kong and China, and is particularly renowned for his work with Chinese martial arts. He is the leading researcher and advocate for traditional Chinese martial arts in Hong Kong, and has initiated multiple projects to document and revitalize these art forms, notably Hong Kong Martial Arts Living Archive, the first ever digital kung fu archive for in the world, and Hong Kong Martial Arts Research, which is the first comprehensive research project on traditional Chinese martial arts in the city. Mr Chao is an internationally recognized writer, curator, organizer, and producer for a wide range of martial arts related / inspired cultural contents, including books, museum exhibitions, festivals, and cultural performances. He has written, edited and / or published eight books on Chinese martial arts in English and Chinese languages, including the best-selling《香港武林》(Hong Kong Martial Arts Community: 2014), as well as his ground-breaking works on Hakka Kung Fu (300 Years of Hakka Kung Fu: 2016) and Lingnan Hung Kuen (such as Lingnan Hung Kuen: Kung Fu in Cinema and Community: 2018).

Since 2009 he has produced and curated eight major exhibitions, which have been on display not only in Hong Kong but also in Mainland China (selections were shown in Shenzhen and Chengdu), Australia and Switzerland. His use of new media technologies and strategies to document and display traditional martial arts represent a ground-breaking change in paradigm not only for martial arts contents / exhibitions, but for intangible culture in general.
