Translator (Chinese to English) at Youth Arch Foundation

How Time Auction works

1. Earn Karma

Donating and logging past volunteer hours earns you Karma Points, which you can then use to bid on auctions. $1 donated earns 1 Karma Point and 1 hour volunteered earns 10 Karma Points.

2. Bid

Bid your Karma Points to meet inspiring people, such as humanitarians, entrepreneurs, athletes, or artists. Most auctions allow every bidder to win if the goal is reached.

3. Meet

Time Auction is all about priceless experiences and rewards for the priceless philanthropy you do. Depending on the auction, meetings are done virtually or in person... or both!

Translator (Chinese to English)

Translate the Chinese subtitles into English for a 10-minute video for Youth Arch Student Improvement Award

Project Details

What we need

  • Understand the content and Chinese subtitles in the video
  • Get familiar with the background & the common terms of Youth Arch Foundation and The Award
  • Translate the Chinese subtitles (around 1,000 words each) into English
  • Review the translation to make sure two languages are aligned

Background

Each year, we would publish a video for the Youth Arch Improvement Student Award, which includes the sharing from the Winners of that year. By sharing how they strive for improvement in conduct, service and academic performance, not necessarily the top in examinations, but have showed their determination and confidence in overcoming challenges and realizing their full potential. As there is a non-Chinese speaker among the winners, we need your help to translate the subtitles into English by keeping every message that the winners try to deliver.

What we have

The background information and a glossary for the terms of the Youth Arch Foundation and the Award would be provided. Volunteers may feel free to ask for help if they encounter any difficulties during the project.

Why this is important

Youth Arch Foundation have a mission to recognise and develop youth talents and the Youth Arch Improvement Student Award aims to strive for improvement in conduct, service and academic performance, not necessarily the top in examinations, but have showed their determination and confidence in overcoming challenges and realizing their full potential. Through the video with bilingual subtitles, the past experience of our awardees can be shared with students from either Chinese or non-Chinese background. Therefore, this project is meaningful and indispensable to share the winner's stories and achieve the goals.

What we do

The Youth Arch Foundation (YAF) is a charitable organization on youth development run by a group of past winners and finalists of the Hong Kong Outstanding Students Award. YAF strives to foster youth talents and to encourage youth to contribute to society through active participation in community services. In order to recognize and develop youth talents, YAF presents two awards annually that aim at commending promising secondary school students, namely the Hong Kong Outstanding Students Award (founded in 1985) and the Youth Arch Student Improvement Award (formerly known as the Best Improved Students Award) (founded in 1991). A wide range of activities are organized for awardees to actively participate in community services and to explore leadership potential. In addition, YAF established the Youth Committee that provide platforms for youth to interact and learn from each other; and to support youth in terms of their personal, educational, career and life developments. YAF also provides assistance to the Hong Kong Outstanding Students’ Association, which is a student-run organization comprised of the past awardees of the Hong Kong Outstanding Students Award.
