What we need
  • Translate 30 recipes from the refugee community into Traditional Chinese
  • Read through Chinese translation of stories to date to check for errors
Background

Table of Two Cities is a program of Grassroots Future, a registered charity. Since 2016, TOTC has been collecting stories from the refugee community, giving a platform to tell stories through the medium of food. TOTC also organises community events around Hong Kong to bring different cultures together over a shared meal. Over nearly 5 years, we have collected stories and recipes which we are finally publishing in a bilingual publication which will be used to fundraise for services for the organisation and our grassroots refugee partners.

What we have

- Briefing call with the founder (Tegan Smyth) to go through the ask of the project- Access to the pro forma of the book mock up to date, to see the style and content- Access to share drives with materials which need to be translated into Chinese (30 recipes from around the world)

Why this is important

We feel that the stories of the refugee community are often overlooked or undervalued. We have collected first person narratives which have never been published before and hope that in creating a bilingual work, we make these important stories accessible to the wider Hong Kong community.

What we do

Grassroots Future looks at empowering grassroots movements and building capacity in the refugee and asylum seeker community. We achieve this through the following model: Education: Supporting the needs of young people and adults through training, mentorship, workshops and general skills training to improve capacity and self sufficiency. Community outreach: Community outreach and cultural events, which are curated by the refugee community, to engage different groups within society. Well-being: Provide safe spaces for healing and mental well-being through the arts and recreational activities. Investing in the future: Supporting the educational expenses of children through our event programming.
