Assist in holding playgroups for hearing children of deaf parents
Language barrier within a family is one of the unique challenges faced by Deaf families (Deaf parents with hearing children), where parents may not be able to provide verbal language input in the same way hearing parents do. This results in speech development delay generally experienced by CODAs (Children of Deaf Adults). This project aims at improving CODAs communication and social skills by encouraging various forms of communication, including vocalizations, gestures, and early word attempts, fostering a foundation for language development.
We have materials, tools, toys and books that could be used for speech therapy. We also offer sign language interpreter in case commuication is required with kids' parents. The teaching plan has been designed, there is another early education student volunteer helping in this project, he knows Sign Language and can use it as assisting teaching language, since Hong Kong Sign Language is the first language of CODAs. He has experience in holding playgroups in our organization before.
Providing support during the critical 0-3 year window allows for early intervention, which is crucial for maximizing a child's potential in language development and minimizing future difficulties. This aligns with CODA Hong Kong's goal of supporting the healthy development of CODA individuals from a young age.

CODA Hong Kong (Children of Deaf Adults) is the first of its kind in Asia. Established in 2013, its objectives are to help CODAs of Hong Kong understand and acknowledge their special identity as bilingual and bicultural, learn and develop potential skills, build a self-help community, and adopt positive outlooks of life. CODAs are the second generation of deaf people. We are therefore concerned about government policies of deaf welfare and sign language. Through education, advocacy, publication and academic research, we promote knowledge of sign language and deaf culture to the public and various stakeholders. We believe in building a society in which the deaf and the hearing integrate harmoniously.
