Hong Kong’s pro bono ecosystem is both fragmented and largely uncoordinated. Those seeking free legal support face a patchwork of resources, which all too often do not cover their particular needs. NGOs don’t know how to access legal support, and lawyers struggle to identify where they are needed most. Two HK-based NGOs, PILnet and Equal Justice, both highly active in the Hong Kong legal pro bono sector, are partnering to fix the system. They have been working with Australian charity, Justice Connect, to import a Hong Kong version of their online Pro Bono Portal technology that will enable NGOs to access free legal support from qualified Hong Kong lawyers. We hope that expanding the Portal into Hong Kong will bridge the legal access poverty gap and reduce hardship. However, despite having this awesome product pretty much ready to go, both organisations lack the marketing ‘pizzazz’ and communications skills and connections to bring to market what is, in effect, also a really cool lawtech product, the Australian model for which has garnered international awards.

More NGOs will be able to access pro bono legal assistance, freeing them to focus on other crucial activities, while strengthening Hong Kong’s pro bono ecosystem and increasing access to justice.
